Funding & Access Routes

Understanding the different ways you may be able to access support

Understanding your funding options

The cost of private ADHD and autism assessment should not be a barrier to getting the right support.

There are a number of funding routes available in the UK that can help cover the cost of assessment, medication, coaching and ongoing support. Some are government-funded entitlements. Others come through employers, insurance providers or workplace schemes. Many people are unaware they are eligible, or that they can combine more than one route.

What funding can cover

When ADHD is well-managed, the impact goes far beyond focus.

Depending on the route, funding can contribute to or fully cover the cost of:

  • Diagnostic assessment for ADHD, autism or AuDHD

  • Medication initiation, titration and ongoing review

  • Coaching and post-diagnostic support

  • Workplace adjustments and productivity tools

  • Travel and care costs associated with attending appointments

The main funding routes

Understanding what is available, and what each route involves.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

PIP is a government benefit for those with conditions affecting daily living or mobility, like ADHD and autism. A diagnosis or strong evidence can support a claim. It’s not means-tested, paid directly, and can cover costs like assessments and medication. We can provide necessary clinical documentation for your PIP application.

Access to Work

Access to Work funds workplace support for people with disabilities or health conditions, including equipment, software, coaching, and transport. No age limit; applicable to employed or self-employed individuals. Claims can be made before or after diagnosis, which can improve eligibility. Our reports support applications.

NHS Right to Choose

If a GP agrees an assessment is suitable, you may select a provider, including independent clinics with NHS contracts. Under Right to Choose, the assessment is NHS-funded, but availability varies by area and conditions. We can help determine if you qualify and what to ask your GP.

Employer and HR funding

Many employers cover assessment and support through occupational health, EAPs, or private insurance. Check if neurodevelopmental assessment or coaching is included. Larger employers may have neurodiversity programmes or HR budgets for adjustments, which an assessment report can formalise. We provide reports for HR, occupational health, and workplace needs.

Funding & access routes

Understanding how to fund private assessments and ongoing support is an important part of planning your care. In the UK, there are many helpful options to assist with costs, such as government schemes like Personal Independence Payment (PIP), workplace support through Access to Work, employer benefits, and private medical insurance. These resources can help cover the costs of assessments, medication, coaching, and practical adjustments at home or at work.

Since these schemes are managed by different systems – the Department for Work and Pensions, employers, insurers, and the NHS – it can sometimes be confusing to know what you’re eligible for or how to apply. Having a clear explanation of each route, what it is for, who it’s for, and what evidence you need can make sure you don’t miss out on support that’s already available to you.

Our role is to connect the dots between your clinical situation and the funding options. We do this by providing assessment reports and letters that decision-makers need, guiding you on which options are realistic for your circumstances, and helping you combine them when appropriate. This way, funding becomes a clear, structured plan that supports long-term, sustainable care.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Questions we often asked

Not always. PIP is assessed on functional need, not diagnosis. However, a formal assessment report significantly strengthens any claim by providing clinical evidence of how your condition affects daily life.

Yes. Access to Work applies to employed and self-employed people, including those on zero-hours contracts or in part-time roles.

You are still entitled to reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. An assessment report provides the clinical basis for requesting those adjustments through HR or occupational health.

In many cases, yes. For example, you might use PIP to support day-to-day costs while also accessing Access to Work for workplace support. We can help you think through what applies to your situation.

Right to Choose requires a GP referral and applies to first outpatient appointments at NHS-commissioned providers. Eligibility depends on your area and circumstances. Speak to your GP or contact us and we can help clarify.
